How will JWSA
smooth the transition to Israel? JWSA
will introduce individuals to others going to Israel to study together. As
part of a group each individual will have support and instant friends to
smooth the transition. In addition JWSA representatives will greet
participants at the airport and organize an orientation,bring in a money
changer, arrange cell phones, give a walking tour of the neighborhood and
introduce participants to others.
What logistics
are facilitated by JWSA? Health
insurance, student ID card, cell phone, airport transport, money changing,
and more.
What will JWSA
provide while I'm in Israel? Students
will be introduced to an "adoptive family" who will serve as a home away
from home while in Israel. Shabbat placements and activities for the group
will be arranged for much of their stay.
Why do women
study in Israel? What do they get out of it?
In addition to a deep and extensive knowledge of Judaism and Jewish texts,
women go to Israel to grow as individuals, to work on character growth,
enrich their Jewish experience and live and tour in Israel.
Will I have
free time while I am there? Yes. Neve
Yerushalayim has mandatory morning and some evening classes, but
afternoons are free for touring, errands, working, volunteering or
optional classes and ulpan.
Will I have
internet access? Yes. Neve Yerushalayim has an
internet cafe on the premises that is open every evening for a small
fee.(10 shekel a week)
What laundry
facilities are at the school? The campus has
washers and dryers for student use.
What is the
living situation at the school? The campus has
10 individual buildings that serve as dormitories. In addition there is
are classrooms, Synagogue, library and cafeteria on the campus.
What if I need to work while there? JWSA will endeavor to connect you with jobs
while in Israel.
Can I get college credits for my study
there? Many universities do accept
college credits, this must be arranged with your university in
advance. Course descriptions can be provided.
What can I do for recreation while in Israel?
There is a gym and swimming pool near
by the Har Nof neighborhood. There are walking tours, museums and
many tourist attractions in and around Jerusalem. In the school
itself there are all kinds of extracurricular classes given (kick
boxing, drama etc...) These are arranged by students on
campus.
Do I need to know Hebrew? You do not need to know Hebrew for the
classes. A minimal knowledge of Hebrew will ease your stay, but it
is not necessary.
Is there an ulpan at the school? Yes, in the afternoons.
What age group of women are at the school? From 19-29
What type of women study there? Women from all over the United States,
England and South Africa study at Neve Yerushalayim. There are
college students taking off a semester, graduate students, and
professionals who are taking off time to study Judaism .
How do parents react to this decision? How can
I ease their concerns about safety, my college studies, my
career? Different parents have different
reactions. JWSA can have a representative talk to your parents to
allay all their concerns. A JWSA counselor will guide you in these
delicate discussions.
What scholarships are available? Masa, Jewish Federations, JAM has access to
a fund that will pay for the ticket to Israel and $150 monthly for
expenses if one is staying for 3 months and $250 for someone staying
for 6 months. A six week stay can get $400 towards the ticket and
expenses. There are criterion for this scholarship..
What are the expenses I will incur while in
Israel? Even if you have health
insurance in America, inorder not to incur out of pocket costs while
in Israel we recommend getting health insurance while there. There
are various types of insurance estimated at $30 per month. Cell
phones in Israel also vary. Cell phones are very worthwhile to have,
as pay phones are not always accessible or available. Additional
expenses include transportation, toiletries,snacks etc... All your
meals are covered at Neve. The school charges tuition which is set
according to ones ability to pay.
Will I have to pay my student loans while
there? No, student loans are suspended while studying
at Neve, which is an accredited institution
